“True patriotism hates injustice in its own land more than anywhere else”
I was admitted to the practice of law in California in 1979 and started my career as a lawyer
working for the Center for Veterans Rights in Los Angeles. I moved up to San Jose in 1981 to
work for the San Jose Chapter of the American G.I. Forum and continued to work on veterans
issues. In 1982 Constance Carpenter and I formed the partnership Carpenter and Mayfield. In
2022 after more than 40 years, we closed the partnership.
In my more than 40 years as a criminal defense lawyer I have tried many many cases including
homicides. I have been in two trials that lasted over a year. Most trials, and most of my trials,
are much shorter but what you need to know as a potential client is that I am not afraid of trials.
In fact I like trials. A trial is a time when I can put everything else aside and concentrate on just
one client.
In addition to my normal criminal practice, these days much of my work involves post-
conviction relief. This means that I often get referrals from immigration lawyers who need help
to clean up an immigrant’s record to protect them from deportation. I also represent clients
seeking to "expunge prior convictions, reduce felony convictions to misdemeanors, or to seek a Certificate of Rehabilitation and be referred to the Governor for a possible pardon. This area of
the law has greatly expanded in recent years. It is now possible, for example, for people who
have been to prison to clean up their records.
As a criminal defense lawyer I cannot promise you an outcome in your case. I can promise you
that I will listen to what you tell me and I will work on your case with the same dedication
whether it is felony or a misdemeanor, a record clearance or a military discharge upgrade.
I firmly believe in the preamble to the Constitution of the National Lawyers Guild:
"The National Lawyers Guild is an association dedicated to the need for basic change in
the structure of our political and economic system. We seek to unite the lawyers, law
students, legal workers, and jailhouse lawyers of America in an organization which shall
function as an effective political and social force in the service of the people, to the end
that human rights shall be regarded as more sacred than property interests.
Our aim is to bring together all those who regard adjustments to new conditions as more
important than the veneration of precedent; who recognize the importance of
safeguarding and extending the rights of workers, women, farmers, and minority groups
upon whom the welfare of the entire nation depends; who seek actively to eliminate
racism; who work to maintain and protect our civil rights and liberties in the face of
persistent attacks upon them; and who look upon the law as an instrument for the
protection of the people, rather than for their repression"

I like to make initial appointments in the late afternoon so that working people do not have totake time off from work to see me. Saturday and Sunday appointments are possible. As a general rule I charge $200 for an initial consultation. I usually charge $360 an hour after that if we agree to work together on your case.
